Pwani University offers a wide range of Masters and PhD programmes in biosciences, health, environmental sciences, agriculture, humanities and social sciences, education, business, hospitality and tourism. Some of these programmes like MSc. Bioinformatics and MSc. Immunology are funded externally. MSc. Bioinformatics is funded by the EANBiT Programme (East African Network for Bioinformatics Training, hosted by icipe), supported by Fogarty International Center of the National Institutes of Health (FIC-NIH, USA) with supplementary co-funding from the Initiative to Develop African Research Leaders (IDeAL), hosted by KEMRI-Wellcome Trust Research Programme (KWTRP), while MSc. Immunology is funded through the IDeaL programme. In addition, the EANBiT programme is a regional programme, that includes partners in Uganda, such as Makerere University and Uganda Virology Research Institute (UVRI), University of Dar es Salaam, and University of Cape Town (SA).
PUBReC already supports MSc. Bioinformatics & MSc. Immunology fellowships by providing research projects to the postgraduate students, in collaboration with KWTRP, icipe and BecA-ILRI Hub. The MSc fellowships are funded by the EANBiT and IDeAL programmes, of which both Pwani University and KWTRP are part of. The two programmes, i.e. MSc. Immunology and MSc. Bioinformatics are offered at Pwani University. PUBReC is also hosting postdoctoral research fellows from KWTRP.
As an RRC, PUBReC will attract further capacity building funding to support other postgraduate programmes that are offered at Pwani Univeristy, at both MSc. and PhD levels in the areas of Biotechnology, Medical Microbiology, Bioinformatics, and other biological and health sciences programmes. The RRC will also attract postdoctoral fellows, and senior scientists on sabbatical.
